Overview

A symmetrical residence on a 1,800 m² plot, organised about a central entrance axis. The classical language is carried by the arched openings, the balcony ironwork and the cornice, and by very little else.

Design narrative

The plan is doubled about its centre. Reception and majlis sit either side of the entrance hall on the ground floor; the family accommodation repeats the arrangement above, which is why the elevation can be as regular as it is.

Ornament is rationed. It appears at the arched heads, the balcony rails and the cornice, and nowhere in between — so the wall surface stays calm and the openings carry the whole composition.

Between the plot line and the front elevation there is a forecourt rather than a garden: paving, low planting and lighting set out to hold the symmetry rather than soften it.
